The Progressive Era, from 1900-1917, was a time when problems were solved, tactics were used to solve them, and foundations were laid for future reforms. During this time, steps and precautions were laid that regulated business, rights, government, and life as we know it. A major goal of this time was the exploitation of the corrupt aspects of the government. After the goals and reforms were met during this time, America became better and better in the eyes of reform groups and activists.

The Progressive Era, in some ways, differ from the Gilded Age. During the Gilded Age, America was skyrocketing in terms of economic success, and the exercising of imperialism. While this all sounds good, the Gilded Age is merely an illusion of a utopia. The Progressive Era, however, slandered the ideals pushed in the Gilded Age. These reformers such as, Jane Addams (social work movements), Margaret Sanger (educated poor neighborhoods on the importance of planned parenthood), Booker Washington, and DuBois all had a huge impact during this time. These reformers gained popularity by strong statements and confidence in their speeches. Also, they formed institutes or reform groups to manage and speak to and for the general welfare of their members. Time and time again we see that the pen is mightier than the sword.The muckrakers during this time used newspapers, books, and literary assets to exploit corruptions and problems during this time. This resulted in laws erected from pen and ink to reform and shape our society. Therefore, the literary exploitation was highly effective.
