Being a leader is the ability to motivate and inspire. Like, Odysseus who traveled for 20 years after the Trojan War and tries to return to Ithaca while facing many challenges. Also, like Martin Luther King Jr who gave powerful protests and speeches to persuade and express his ideas to his followers. These two leaders show many qualities that make a good leader. Leadership qualities such as wisdom, self-control, and bravery support a good leader. Wisdom is important because it helps make the right decision in a situation. Such as Odysseus telling Polyphemus his name is "nohbdy". Odysseus shows his intelligence when he and his men get caught by Polyphemus on the island of the Cyclopes. To escape, Odysseus gets Polyphemus drunk and tells him his name is "nohbdy", so when Odysseus stabs his eye out, Polyphemus can't call for help. However, in Martin Luther Kings "I Have a Dream Speech", Martin describes unfairness and social injustice and discrimination while using emotional intelligence (Wallace). Martin Luther using his intelligence skills in a speech helped persuade and inspire an end to racial and economic inequality. For example, self-control helped Odysseus survive his journey when he saved his crew by the lotus eaters. While Odysseus crew was lured in by the lotus eaters and were close to abandoning their goals. Luckily, Odysseus had control to resist the lotus eaters, and dragged his crew back to his ship, saving them to return home to Ithaca. On the other hand, while Martin Luther King fought for freedom, he endures abuse from the white man, that felt like he didn’t deserve equal rights which lead to physical violence (Wallace).
