DNA are inside genes, and genes are within cells. In each cell, there are different genes that have certain functions depending on where the are located in the body (Page 45). Within the cells, there are genetic switches that turn on and off the use of certain genes (Page 46). These genetic switches could have played a very important role in the genes that caused the development of the fish fin. With little changes over a long period of time, these genetic switches could have been the cause of the development of the human hand (Page 47).

In the novel The Double Helix by James D Watson, this exact thing happens to the various scientists throughout the story. In this particular section of the novel, Sir Lawrence Bragg had asked Watson and Crick to stop working on DNA due to Watson and Crick presenting flawed models to Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin (who were also working on DNA, but used different methods). After Watson was told that he was prohibited from studying DNA, he was offered a job to work on TMV. This was a good choice, because his work on TMV had helped him realize that the proteins in the structure of TMV were arranged like a helix.

The technology today allows for major advances in IVF, and can allow parents to edit the soon to be child’s DNA qualities. The idea of parents personally choosing qualities for their unborn child in the past was a profound thought, but today it is very well possible. Doctors can choose the simple things such as gender and eye color, but also, can alter genes and DNA to ensure the child won’t have any default mitochondria, or can help another sibling with diseases. This shows that people felt the urge to observe the laws of nature because they were curious. Charleton supported science and believed that people should make scientific discoveries to explain everyday occurrences. Leibniz, a German philosopher, wrote that movements of matter were “produced for the happiness of the good” (Doc 11).
Innate behaviors evolve like other physical characteristics. They both influenced by Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. This theory has been tested many times; is supported by hypotheses, laws, facts, and inferences; and has predictive power. The theory tells us that animals have different alleles caused by small mutations in the DNA.
