While some slaves fought against their masters with rebellion, others chose to simply live in a way of avoiding attention being drawn to them; they would get done what needed to be done and nothing more. Their actions affected the lives
Sharecropping: A Similarity to Slavery The Civil War marked a monumental period in United States History. President Lincoln found himself attempting to preserve the union, while the Confederalists from the south were fighting to create their own separate country. This war was primarily caused by one issue: slavery.
All slaves were given limited portions of food and occasionally a new pair of clothes/rages. Despite this, the slaves still found a way to bring in their own culture and find happiness in their struggles. They managed to sing songs, play music, tell stories, raise children, and get married in attempt to “restore peace… [and] ease their sadness” within their slave quarters (South Carolina Journey pg, 124) . They prayed for freedom and looked at the exile of the Jews out of Egypt for hope and guidance. Frequently, the slaves would demonstrate forms of resistance such as; damaging property, pretending to be sick, working slowly, run away, or even organize a revolt.
Many slaves did not initially know how to deal with this immediate freedom. Some began to be
One of the ways they would have resisted their enslavement was by running away, which would be one of the more risky ways. They would try to escape their plantation in hopes of becoming free; they would risk being caught and put into harsh working conditions. This topic matters because it gives a reason as to why there is racism today. People back then understood that enslaving one another was a bad thing, and so they made an excuse by claiming that people with darker skin colors were less than human. Even though slavery is abolished today, we are still facing certain repercussions from the excuses used to justify slavery, which is the cause of racism against black people.
Evaluating Cruelty: Sharecropping and Slavery “After the Civil War, former slaves sought jobs, and planters sought laborers. The absence of cash or an independent credit system led to the creation of sharecropping” (Pollard para. 1). Sharecropping is the action of allowing workers, called sharecroppers, to work on someone else’s farm. This let former slaves find jobs; however, farmers found loopholes to exploit the former slaves. Because of this, the workers were rarely paid the amount they needed for their needs.
In a way, this lead to dehumanization among black people because of the harsh treatments during the slave
Another reason what they did to resist was rebelling and sabotaging. They should of invent new vehicle or machines for slaves could finish their work faster, and it would help them from getting less tired. Inventor could try to invent a new technology for it could be a new way to have. They would break tools and pretend to understand the work. Some enslaved Africans American did rebel openly against their master.
The slave trade was a controversial issue for many people and still is even today. However, many of the leaders of European countries at the time of the slave trade were considered Enlightened Despots due to their reforms set in place to actually help the people and the betterment of the country. Also most of the writing at this time was observing treatment of slaves and most of the people in the world had accepted Enlightenment ideals or traditional christian values wherein both, everyone deserved rights. This is why it can be inferred that during the 17th to 19th c. there was not an absence of humanitarian concern for slaves when it came to the slave trade, but instead it was individuals who lacked humanitarianism while the rest of the world
Many slaves sought to violence when it came to the resistance of slavery. Although, most acts of violence among the slaves were subtle, “Examples of subtle violence resistance were intentionally or accidentally maiming work animals or oneself and destroying work tools” (“Slave Resistance”). Slaves believed that subtle acts of violence such as maiming equipment or even poisoning their masters would be easier to get away with. In many cases, plantation owners may not even recognize said actions as purposeful but merely accidental. Some slaves, such as Fredrick Douglas, resulted to fighting in order to resist slavery.
It is an obvious truth that in order to have a functioning society, there must be workers. In modern, first world countries, labors are paid well and are reasonably treated. However, some third world nations use an economic model harkening back to older times—slavery and serfdom. Between 1450 and 1750, European countries in the Caribbean and in the Old World utilized two forms of cheap labor—slavery and serfdom—to line their coffers and feed their populace. In the Caribbean, slavery was preferred; but in Russia, serfdom ruled.
Rebecca Meyer US 1 Honors Mrs. Charest February 14th Rebellion methods used by slaves During the time of slavery, slaves were often beaten and mistreated for the smallest of offenses. Although slaves were treated horribly by their masters, they learned to accommodate to their conditions to formulate a better life. Slaves rebelled in many ways; often, covert or public methods were used, but all efforts to rebel inspired change and impacted many people around the world. Some of the most common methods of rebellion used by slaves were covert; this was both one of the safest and most potentially dangerous categories of rebellion.
Resistance helped enslaved African Americans endure their lives by striking back at white masters". This demonstrates that slaves also got away with things these were some examples on how the slaves
This seems what today, we would call “child’s play”, but this is all they could accomplish without their masters getting suspicious of their resistance. That was just a few of their acts, this next act was a little risky on their part. Slaves would “run-away”, but they would only go short distance. This plan was only able to slow production down and develop bargaining negotiations with the owners. Lastly, the biggest resistance of them all, running away entirely and escaping to the Underground Railroad.
Slaves also showed resistance in the form of religious practices in order to find comfort in the face of oppression. Violent rebellions were less common and mostly unsuccessful, but open defiance brought terror upon Southern whites. Slaves resisted the oppressive rule of their masters through aggressive acts like fighting overseers, revolts, and suicide,
