I used to think genre was a category or a label that defined a written piece. My understanding relied exclusively on the format. However, when I read “Navigating Genres”, by Kerry Dirk, I realized how limited my understanding was. In his essay, Dirk wants his audience to challenge the misconceptions of genres in writing. Dirk exposes the reader to see writing through the lenses of genre theory and to conceptualize the benefits of genres in our rhetoric.
One may think that without these things they are a “bad” writer. However, this is not the case. There are not perfect writers, only experienced writers. To gain insight regarding experienced writers, I had the opportunity
Intro In chapter five of Laura Aull’s book, Developing Writers in Higher Education, Aull goes over her study of the presence of generality, certainty, and hedges and boosters in undergraduate students writing. Throughout this chapter she follows along several lines of inquiry (henceforth known as LOI) related to the topics, for the purpose of this paper I will only be writing about one, the use of generalization. Introducing the LOI
In Ray Bradbury's story Fahrenheit 451 it talks about a fireman named Guy Montag that lives in a futuristic city. In Montag’s world firemen would start fires rather than putting them out. The people in this society did not read books instead they were always inside their house, did not think independently, and were always in front of a wall-sized television screen. Montag discovered a teenage girl named Clarisse who seemed very peculiar to Montag because she always thought of the most random things that no one would think of. In other words, she didn't act like everybody else.

Sidharth Siddapureddy *INSERT CHEESY TITLE HERE* A surge of insignificance flowed through my body as I looked out upon the colossal rolling hills of the Smoky Mountains that looked like a vast, uncontrollable, green ocean in stretching infinitely all directions. It was illuminating to see how tiny I was compared to this vast, immeasurable planet. It was early morning as the sun peeked over the mountains in the distance spreading its warmth to our chilly bus. My back was hurting as I had slept on a concrete floor last night with only a thin sleeping bag sparing me from the cold rock floor, but that went unnoticed as I looked upon the never-ending sea of green going by my window.
I chose to do my summary on an essay by Russell Baker: “On Becoming a Writer”. I felt that I could relate to the main point, which was that writing for things that you like, or like to, do is more fun and rewarding than writing for an assignment. He dreaded reading and writing assignments until he wrote something that made the “depths of his memory become a vivid recollection” it him happy and remember good times with his family. As a Sixteen-Year-Old high-school student, Russell did not think of writing as a real job or a way to earn a living.

In the novel, Margaret Atwood uses the literary device of symbolism to point out the symbols that represent gender roles for women that they need to follow or else they start a conflict between genders and become outsiders in society. Being a maid in the nineteenth century, symbolized one of the roles for women that they need to conform, but there are some women who did not want to work as a maid. Dora, a maid that works at Dr. Jordan’s hotel is an example of someone who does not appreciate working as a maid and Dr. Jordan can see this in her. “It’s obvious that she detests being a maid-of-all-work; he wonders if there is anything else she might prefer. He has tried imagining her as a prostitute…but he can’t picture any man actually paying for her services.”
Career Narrative: Psychiatrist When it comes to the work force, we have many choices of what we can do, but, it is up to us to figure out what we want to do for the rest of our lives. My career goal is to become an Adult Psychiatrist, I want to be an Adult Psychiatrist because I would like to help people who cannot help themselves. I believe I would be a good fit for this position because I feel I that I have quite a few of the characteristics necessary to help people who need it the most. I would work to get the patient back into the world and to be a fully-functioning member of society. I would likely work at a psychiatric hospital because the people there would need the help the most, due to either being forced to be there, or they are
Xerxes the great, the fourth king of Persia, emerged as one of the most intriguing historical figures of his time. After his father, Darius the Great was assassinated, Xerxes was left to finish what his father failed to accomplish and made numerous attempts to avenge his title. These attempts include the multiple expeditions he mounted to Greece which resulted in a series of defeats. Xerxes was left susceptible to the bias and hostile accounts written by Greek writers, which present him as a violent and unstable ruler. Accounts by Herodotus as well as other primary sources remain the only foundations that portray Xerxes in a positive light, balancing out his good and bad points.
As a five year old I adored to play with my various dolls and stuffed animals. Together we would play school; I would be the teacher and they were my students. I loved teaching all of my stuffed friends what I previously learned in kindergarten that day. My greatest role model at the time was my teacher Mrs. Case and I wanted to be just like her when I was older.
