Define America In a time of uncertainty and confusion America was a very fragile as a country. Authors through out America's time have told of what this country can be and what it is today. These authors Thomas Jefferson, Walt Whitman, Harry Browne and many others voice their opinions on how America should go about changing and talk about how America used to be the greatest country. Thomas Jefferson, America's 3rd President, was one of the best leaders it had fighting for the freedom of America's people. Walt Whitman was a renown American poet known for writing about the beauty of America and what America need to change. The growth the country has made knows no bounds. America is still growing from the past and present day, its ancestors and the future that awaits it.
America was founded on July 4th, 1776 by the first merchants and adventurers ever to set foot in this new land. They left their homes seeking a new life from their tyrant of a king. The founding fathers set foot to make this country into something great, setting rules and guidelines to follow under a democracy unlike the old country. They established the government by writing the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson explains in the Declaration that "it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which they connected them with another...the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and nature's god entitle them." (pg.635). Thomas is talking about how the people wanted to be a free and independent nation with rights to all man and how King George III was violating those rights. For America to grow as a country it must first focus on itself more than it does now. Focus on everything that's hindering it from completing what must be done for change to happen. The nation must stand together to get back on track with the way this country be heading. Langston Hughes says it best in Let America Be America Again "Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—Let it be that great strong land of loveWhere never kings connive nor tyrants schemeThat any man be crushed by one above." (Hughes). He talks about a time here where we used to be, a time in which we can get back if this country actually wanted it. The vision of America is that of some place people dream of living, a place where you are in control over your actions and not your government. This country is on a path leading to its own destruction because we are letting it instead of changing its direction. Like Walt Whitman says in I hear America singing "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong." (Whitman). This shows the time when America was a proud country, proud of the work they did and that of each other.
