Compare and contrast two ways platform workers are organizing for justice? Which do you think is more effective and why? Platform workers have been organizing for benefits, better wages and working conditions in a variety of different ways. Two major ways platform workers are organizing for justice are through traditional unions and digital platform organizing. Traditional unions include workers coming together as a collective to bargain with their employer for benefits, better wages and working conditions. Eidlin argues that although traditional unions have been an effective way to organize justice, they might not be enough to address the issues that workers face in the present economy. Traditional unions may have difficulties in organizing workers in the gig economy because workers are mostly classed as independent contractors and don’t have the same protections legally as traditional employees (7). This is because traditional unions may struggle to connect and organize workers are that are independent contractors because they do not have the same legal protections compared to traditional employees. Digital platform organizing can be useful in order to overcome these challenges by connecting workers in different industries and locations which allows them to build collective power. On top of that, digital platform organizing can be a more effective method in addressing the needs of platform workers that are mostly working irregular hours and are geographically dispersed.
