Sit Down or Stand up? I find it interesting how two people striving to achieve the same goal could have such different ways in which they plan to do so. In this case, they were polar opposites from each other. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. du bois both wanted equality of all races but their methods of how they were going to do that were very different. Booker T. and W.E.B. were both african american men that lived in a time period where african american people were discriminated against. Both Booker T. and W.E.B. were well educated. They were both striving to achieve equality but had very different approaches to the way they were going to achieve it. Booker had a more passive approach while W.E.B. had a more aggressive approach. was born a slave and when he was 9 years old the Civil War ended (history.com staff). Following emancipation, Washington (like many Blacks) felt that a formalized education was the best way to improve his living standards. Due to social segregation, the availability of education for blacks in was fairly limited. In response, Washington traveled to Hampton Institute where he undertook industrial education. At Hampton, his studies focused on the acquisition of industrial or practical working skills as opposed to the liberal arts (“History of Black Education: Washington and Du Bois”). You can see how this could impact his perspective one of the the things Booker T. believed was that the african american people should work on bettering the economy. It makes sense that his industrial education would lead him to want to better the economy. Also, Booker T.’s upbringing as a slave could be the reason why Booker T. does not want people to protest and fight against the white people. I can imagine Booker T. saw a lot of violence from white people toward black people when he probably didn’t want to see any …show more content…
was educated at Harvard University and other top schools, Du Bois studied with some of the most important social thinkers of his time (history.com). W.E.B. did not grow up during the time of slavery so he has different experiences than Booker T. this is part of the reason why they have such differing opinions. “He earned fame for the publication of such works as Souls of Black Folk (1903), and was a founding officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and editor of its magazine” (history.com). The NAACP is an organization that supports minority races and works towards racial equality and equal rights. The NAACP is an organization that is still here today. The fact that W.E.B. founded an organization shows how passionate he was. According to history.com, Dubois also taught at Wilberforce University and Atlanta University, and chaired the Peace Information Center” (history.com). You can see how much education mattered to W.E.B. Not only did he get himself a quality education, but he also taught and universities to give other people a chance to get a quality education. W.E.B. was a very educated and intelligent man that played a huge role in the effort towards racial equality. Without W.E.B. our country probably wouldn’t be where it is
