Election of 1952 - Eisenhower vs. Stevenson
Going into the Election of 1952, sitting president, Harry S. Truman, was losing support of the people. Being the end of his second term, the country knew they were going to have a new president. One of the main issues of this election was going to be the Korean War which had began during Truman´s presidency. Also, a main issue was the “Red Scare” that was sparked by the Republican Senator Joe Mcarthy only two before the election. His claims of communism in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations tainted the reputation of the Democratic Party.
On the Republican side, the former general Dwight D. Eisenhower was persuaded to enter the race. After being nominated at the RNC, he choose his running mate, Richard Nixon. He campaign slogan was “It’s Time For A Change”. At the Democratic Convention, a large issue was civil rights. The Northern democrats beliveved in civil rights, while the Southern Democrats were strongly against them. While Senator Richard Russel and Senator Estes Kefauver tried to go fro the nominationm Adlai E. Stevenson was drafted at the convention to be the Democratic presidential nominee. His campaign slogan was “You Never Had It So Good”. Stevenson then chose his running mate, Senator John Sparkman. …show more content…

Having nearly no competitiors, Al Gore, Clinton’s vice president for both of his terms, was selected for the Democratic ticket. Al Gore’s campaign slogan was “Prosperity For America’s Families”. The majority of the drama in the primary election came from the Republicans who had a tight race for the nominee. The two biggest competitiors were George W. Bush and John McCain. George Bush however did get the Republican ticket. His campaign slogan was “A Fresh Start”. During the campaign, it appeared that Bush would easily win the election.
