May 25th, 1787, the constitution was first drafted. The drafting of the constitution led to an entirely new America. An America that was going to triumph rather than fail, due to the Articles of Confederation. The Articles were the 1st constitution America ever had, and gave the National government zero power. Under the articles of confederation there was a unicameral legislature, meaning there was only one branch of government. The founders of America wanted to create a centralized government in which everyone had equal power, unlike the british monarchy. By doing this, they could compare and contrast each one and see how they could incorporate it into an American form of government. There are four forms of government: monarchy, oligarchy, aristocracy, and democracy. One of the first forms of government is a Monarchy. A monarchy is ruled by kings and queens, and you have to be blood related in order to ever reach a powerful position. Monarchy’s still exist in the the world today in place such as England, Canada (a constitutional monarchy), and Japan. An aristocracy/oligarchy is ruled by the “few”, those who are “the best and brightest of the population.(Schendan Notes 9/8/14)” Aristotle and Plato, famous Greek philosophers, created the idea of an Aristocracy. They thought that the most intelligent people should be put in charge of the government, believing that they will make the right decisions for their citizens. Lastly, there is a democracy. A democracy is a form of government in which people make the decisions. It is a common misconception that America lives in a pure democracy, however, only part of that is true. We incorporated a monarchy type of government by creating a President. Unlike a monarchy, a President can only serve for two consecutive terms. Next, is the Senate. The senate serves 6 year terms, and has no limit on how many time they can serve throughout their lifetime. Lastly, there is the House of Representatives. Similar to the Senate, the House can serve for life but has to go up for reelection every two years. They only serve two consecutive years at a time because the house represent the people, and the people are constantly
