An arrogant person typically presumes he is being self-confident, as both characteristics share traits of thinking positive of one self. However, arrogance is described as a person who has a sense of self-empowerment or entitlement, while self-confidence is described as a person who believes in his own abilities without putting others down.
A sense of entitlement or superiority defines an arrogant individual, causing him to be blinded by his or her own judgement. The origin of the word “arrogant” is derived from the Latin word “arrogantia”, which mans to be insolent or arrogant. People who are humble know that they are capable of surpassing their own expectations without having a sense of entitlement. The origin of the word “self” is derived from the Old English word “selfa” and Dutch word “zelf”, which is used to refer to one’s own person. The word “confidence” is derived from the Latin word “confidential”, which means to have assurance and boldness/confidence. Other characteristics relatable to self-confidence are being positive, secure, and courageous. Someone with characteristics opposite of self-confidence will display unsureness, diffidence, uncertainty, and possibly, even fear. One great example of self-confidence is Belle, also from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She is a smart, strong willed young lady who knows that she deserves better than Gaston can offer, but not because she is arrogant. She knows she deserves better because she believes in herself and knows that she is capable of anything she sets her mind into, even taking her father’s place at the castle, where he is being kept captive. Belle’s confidence slowly attracts the Beast and he ends up falling in love with her. This is a perfect example that confidence can help change a man with a good heart, but someone as arrogant as Gaston may not be as easily
