Comparing Catholic Social Teaching And Biomedical Engineering's Code Of Ethics

There are many commonalities between the Catholic social teachings and the biomedical engineer's code of ethics, due to the fact that they both have a strong focus on the safety and well-being of all people, including both the workers and the consumers. Fundamental rights/responsibilities and workers’ rights are two of the Catholic social teaching themes closely relatable to engineers or scientists in the biomedical engineering field.
The first of these themes is related to the basic rights and responsibilities that should be granted to each individual. According to the social teachings, this includes morals, compensation, and being competent in the work one is doing. These rights are not meant to be only to oneself, but rather to each other, whether that is solely one other individual, a group, community, or society in general. A worker should be entitled to all of the following: work that is productive, a just salary, the right to create and/or become part of a union, and ownership of private property; this is according to the Catholic social teachings, which also states that the main focus of worker’s rights is the safety, health, and welfare of the workers. The biomedical engineering code of ethics also states that public health and welfare of the workers is of upmost concern. Another item addressed, in the code of ethics, related to worker’s rights was that when students are trained by professionals to behave properly, while in the work environment, professionals should portray the same conduct that they are teaching their students. All training and teachings should exclude any form of any inappropriate behavior or favoritism.
