Questionnaires were very widely discussed throughout this chapter. I chose to talk about, compare, and contrast the Youth Sport Value Questionnaire from chapter two and the Youth Sport Value Questionnaire-2 from chapter five. The first questionnaire was conducted between different young individuals to develop an understanding on the most important and most ranked value and value systems. “Research with the YSVQ has typically shown that enjoyment ranks highest in youth sport value systems” (Lee and Cockman, 1995, p. 204). This is particularly important to me because enjoyment is something very significant to have while playing and participating in sport. When enjoyment is put in place, everything else tends to fall in place as well. Personal achievement was also ranked high in this particular questionnaire. However, the …show more content…
As stated before, both of these studies held different beliefs on value systems. They ranked different values near the top, but more of the same near the bottom. It was particularly interesting to see that this change was so significant in youth. Enjoyment ranked high for the YSVQ and personal achievement was at a high rank for the YSVQ-2. I think this is extremely important because personal achievement can feed off of enjoyment. When a student or child enjoys something, he/she is more than likely going to want to continue playing a sport. Playing and participating in a certain sport over time can increase one’s ability and increase his/her personal achievement. I really liked this point made in chapter six, “However, we must also point out that all values were regarded – both by definition and by participants – as important guiding principals in youth sport, or in life, hence winning is an important value, and this low ranking is relative to other values” (Schwartz and Bardi, 2001, p. 116). Even though winning may not be ranked as high in a child’s eye, winning and even losing is something that every individual must go
