Romeo and Juliet

The story of Romeo and Juliet is one of the great stories of two lovers who cannot be

with each other due to problems in their world, such as the fact that they are not necessarily

allowed to choose their own mates. William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet shows the

suffering of these two people and the problems they confront. As Prince Escalus says at the end

of the play, some of the m any people who have died will be given pardon and some will be

punished. It is clear that Romeo and Juliet do not deserve to be punished as all they want is one

another and the right to love. However, Capulet and Lady Capulet deserves= punishment for

their bad words toward their own daughter. .

It might be true that she should follow her

parents’ desire to marry someone else. This is not a serious character flaw, though, because she

is so young and does not intend to hurt anyone. Actually, in the beginning, when her mother

claims she should consider Paris as a husband, she replies that she will consider that possibility

(1.3.100). She wants to do the right thing and cannot help that she finds herself in love with

Romeo. She marries him rather than having an affair because that would truly be wrong.

Romeo is not quite as innocent as Juliet. He also falls in love with her and his love is

pure and he means only the best. However, he does make a major mistake in that he kills

Tybalt because he has killed Mercutio. Because of this problem, the prince exiles Romeo and he

is not to return home. It does not appear that Romeo acted so badly in that he did feel he had to

take vengeance for the death of his friend. In other ways, Romeo acts properly. He marries Juliet

with great love and caring, even though, like Juliet, he is doing it without his
