Biography Profile

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a fictional author who wrote short stories and poems which interested many readers. These stories were great at capturing the imagination and perspective of them. These stories were usually horror and suspense fiction stories, and then later he started a new genre of story called detective fiction.
Some of his best known works include The Raven (1895), The Black Cat (1843), and Annabel Lee (1849). People consider the Raven to be one of the best poems in American literature. In this story the narrator mourns over the loss of his love Lenore, and later encounters a raven who repeats the word “nevermore”. In The Black Cat, the black cat and the narrator's wife suffer abuse from the alcoholic narrator. After the narrator murdered his wife the black cat reported his actions to the police. John Allan was a successful tobacco merchant who lived with his wife in Richmond, Virginia. When he was thirteen years old, he started writing poetry. The headmaster and John Allan did not like this because they wanted Edgar to follow the family business.
Edgar was given a great education in the University of Virginia, where he excelled in his classes. He also had much experience in a military academy. He went to the military academy after he couldn’t cover all of his costs and lost the rest of his money
