Comparing Erikson's Stages Of Adolescence And Young Adulthood

In Erikson’s stages of psychological development, even though adolescence and young adulthood are right next to each other, they are very completely different and also the two most confusing stages of our lives.

As an adolescent, starting around 12, your body and mind are changing. You are starting to go through puberty, your hormones are all over the place and you’re searching for a sense of self. Whether it be your sexual identity or your personal identity, it is extremely confusing. Adolescence can struggle with their sexual identity if their early and middle childhood didn’t have a strong foundation, they can lack trust and have low self-esteem due to their environment growing up. You’re stepping over into the age where most people start applying those goals they set as adolescence’s, they go off to college or start working, you start deciding what’s best for you and you start sharing yourself more intimately with others. A lot of young adults explore their sexuality as well, they start acting on the feelings they might’ve had while they were adolescence but feel freer to do so because of college and society. Your 20’s become the years to start finding yourself and what you want and need. As a young adult, especially in your 20’s you will start exploring relationships with people but as you grow older and start easing towards your 30’s, most people will start yearning for a more long-term commitment with their partners but some adults who don’t have success in that area and avoid intimacy and fear commitment can often lead to loneliness, isolation and maybe even …show more content…

Our sexual behavior goes from being curious, trying things and even losing your virginity while you’re an adolescent to having multiple partners and sexual experiences as a young adult. This isn’t the same for everyone but it can be our most sexual years, especially in this generation due to curiosity, society, music influences and our hormone levels. Young adults can become more promiscuous and even experiment with the same sex while still figuring out their sexual identity. Women tend to mature faster than men but women also can confuse sexual encounters for actual feelings which can make things messy with their future partners and can also make them fear commitment. This generation struggle with a commitment which is why we created a “talking stage”. The foundation you have during your childhood shows a lot as you grow older. As a teenager and young adult, you start thinking for yourself. You start doing things for you and changing your outlook on things that sometimes your parents feel differently on. The older generation struggle with their children when it comes to sexuality, religion, and politics. Millennials are more accepting of the LGBTQIA+ community, different religions and even politics due to the nature that things have changed since when our parents and grandparents were around this age.
