As mentioned in Every Young Child a Reader, Gibson and Moss (2016) describe Gough and Tunmer’s simple view of reading, which states “Reading comprehension (RC) is RC = D + LC” (p. 7). The formula shows that a student’s reading comprehension score can be predicted if decoding skills and listening comprehension abilities are known. In other words, if a child can decode words and understand spoken language, then reading comprehension can be calculated. The formula makes it clear that comprehension cannot occur unless both, decoding and language comprehension, are strong. This formula acts as a starting point for reading instruction and can help educators with assessing reading weaknesses and providing appropriate instruction. The language …show more content…

Effective teachers of reading and writing rely on a multitude of sources. Louisa Moats (2010) states, “They raise students’ ability to interpret and generate sound-spellings, syllables, morphemes, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and various genres of text” (p. 16). Learning to read and write is fundamental to children’s success in school and later in life, regardless of their background, socio-economic status or opportunities. The foundations for learning to read and write starts long before coming to school and has lifelong effects. Children reared in families where parents provide literacy support do better in school. Language and literacy go hand-in-hand. Children’s phonological awareness is critical in learning to decode. The child’s vocabulary is a prediction of reading comprehension. There is a strong relationship between vocabulary development and reading achievement. The more limited a child’s experiences the more likely he or she will have difficulty comprehending what is read. In other words, reading is essential life and early exposure lays the foundation. Educators must build on the knowledge young learners bring from home and provide a strong, solid, and challenging, yet achievable, early education to ensure long-term academic success. The ELL student will progress with a strong foundation in his or her home
