The works of art I chose to compare and contrast are Memento Mori, "To This Favour", 1879 by William Michael Harnett, and Bull Skull, Fruit, Pitcher, 1939 by Pablo Picasso. The symbolism behind these two paintings are very similar. There are also some similarities in the composition of these two paintings, but there are many differences in the composition of these two paintings. The first symbolic similarity is that these paintings have a meaning of death.
Every artist is different and that goes for the art too. Any piece of art looks different with the shape, style, color, or even smell sometimes. On a canvas, it could have similar brushstrokes and completely different. Also, the reason why they started to paint, either to make money, to gain status, or just for fun. Just like there is differences between artists Henrietta Johnson and John Smibert.
I chose these works of art because they had many similarities when I began to do my research. These two work of art should be compared because they have the same building structure and although they were
Picasso has strongly focused to give a political statement in his painting, it gives the viewers a message that killing of innocent people, violence, unrest in the region, bombing and the overall destruction is of no use to humanity and it only gives harm and pain. He is trying to tell the people that peace and harmony is the only solution that would benefit the world. Though the painting Guernica was painted by Picasso as a reply to the bombings and unrest in Spain by the German and Italian forces in Spanish civil war, the painting has not only created its affect for the Guernica of that time but also it has left a message and meaning for us and years to come. The unrest in many conflicted regions today, like what happened in the Arab spring

The Third of May, 1808 was an oil painting painted in 1814 by the Spanish painter Francisco de Goya. The scene depicted was commemorating the Spanish resistance to the invasion of Napoleon’s troops, which was part of the Peninsular war, one of the many Napoleonic wars occurred in Europe during the early 19th century. The slaughter of Goya’s countrymen and the horrors of war made a profound impression on him and acted as an essential element that caused Goya to start this artwork, which is acclaimed as one of the great art of all time and has even been called the world’s first modern painting. Goya being a Spanish himself, a bias somewhat exists in this painting that obviously the Spanish are the innocent victim and the French are the brutal aggressors.
Pablo Picasso and Francisco de Goya were both prolific artists of their times, offering works of great visual travesty of the glories of warfare and bloody victory. Goya was a lifelong rebel. A libertarian opposed to all sorts of tyranny, the Spanish artist began as a semi-Rococo designer for tapestries. Then he became painter to Charles IV of Spain, whose court was known for corruption and repression.
In conclusion, they have some similarties but they have also different features becuase they don’t share exactly same environment. People, desire for something, geometry they are. I have realized that they are quite different but they wanted to live in better life. So, they put those desire into paintings, sculptures, buildings and it have made culutres. We should understand these context and approach because it is the easiest way to appreciate a work.
Francisco Goya's 'The third of May' was a 1814 painting of Francisco de Goya delineating the execution of the Spanish citizenry resulting from the battling in the Puerto del Sol region of Madrid. This work of art primarily consists of three characters : The man in the white shirt, Dead men and the Soldiers. The Man in the White Shirt is a Christ figure. Goya’s painting “The Execution of the Third of May” is a visual work of art combined with Ferlinghetti’s poem “ In Goya’s greatest scenes we seem to see.” Both of the works create a continuing theme of man’s inhumanity to man and relate to society today. Ferlinghetti writes that “In Goya’s greatest scenes we seem to see the people of the world that “…writhe upon the page in a veritable rage of adversity.”
One well-known humanist who increased the popularity of humanism is Francesco Petrarch (1304-1374). Petrarch showed his expertise in poetry, humanism, and scholarship and had a deep understanding of what ancient Latin and Greek literature had been in antiquity. He was interested in making literature the greatest intellectual activity and made poetry his sole profession. For example, Petrarch “took words, methods of sentence structure, figures of speech, and stories from the Latin classics and gave them a new European life.” (Sautter 19)
The other was commissioned by the government much later. This is a very realistically styled romantic painting using colors like black,
Although the Guernica bombings may have been the inspiration, this painting is not directly representing Guernica. Picasso’s message through the painting is a universal message that war is painful and
