In theatre class, we watched the 2010 PBS movie of Macbeth with Patrick Stewart as Macbeth. I had high hopes for this movie as I know Patrick Steward is a highly respected actor. However I felt with most of the actors that played in this movie, the were miscast or should not have been casted at all. Macbeth play written by William Shakespeare about a a married aristocrat couple who fall under a witch’s curse. With their dream of becoming royalty causes their ultimate downfall. The PBS film represented this play as been taking place around a world war (possibly World War II). The original Macbeth play was sent in Scotland around the 11th Century. It made the choosing for Patrick Stewart more ideal. However, even though I think Patrick Stewart has the right physical appearance for the setting. I believe that him as Macbeth was not very strong. Patrick Stewart is a great actor because he show emotion through eyes. This is what makes turning plays into films difficult. Characters in plays (especially in William Shakespeare’s plays) have so much face and body emotion. This makes it hard for actors like Patrick Stewart to portray the characters feelings when they can only successfully have emotions seen in their eyes. Macbeth is especially hard to play in films because he is and extremely emotional character. This means eye emotions are not enough for the character and made Macbeth seem almost boring. It did not work for the film in general either. It did not show Macbeth’s true outwardly feelings. I felt this with most main characters. I also felt the entire film itself was unclear. The only people that can really watch and enjoy the movie are the people that have a understanding of what a Shakespeare is saying in Macbeth. If you have no idea what Shakespeare wrote, then you will have no clue where you were in the film. The transitions are so unclear. For example, the transition from the celebration dinner to Lady Macbeth poisoning the guard is so unclear. However, even for people that would know what Macbeth is saying and the transitions, they
