It is believed Romeo and Juliet is to be based on a real Italian story from the 3rd century where the ‘real families’ are called the Capeletti and the Montecci’s. Shakespeare wrote his version of Romeo and Juliet in 1594 and it was based on a poem written by Arthur Brooke’s poem of 1562 “Romeus and Juliet”. The time in which it was written in ‘The Elizabethan era’ which is also known as ‘the Renaissance’; this is a time with significant changes in religion, politics, science, language and the arts.
