A computer programmer named Thomas Anderson by day, and a computer hacker, Neo at night. He is contacted by a legendary hacker also known by Neo as 'terrorist' by the government called Morpheus. Morpheus offers to tell him the truth about his existence if he trusts him. Neo had been questioning his reality. Neo agreed to follow and joins Morpheus who frees him from what he believes to be the real world, but is actually a virtual world based on the late twentieth century, known as 'the Matrix'.

Meanwhile in the real world human beings are enslaved by machines, who use them as a source of power, making them compliant by placing them in the Matrix. Morpheus is a leader of a rebellious group of people who have been freed from the Matrix and now fight against the machines. The One is the Messiah figure who would free the first human beings, establish the free city of Zion, and is prophesied to return to bring freedom to all and a final victory. Morpheus sent Trinity one of the terrorist in his rebellious group to contact Neo, believing he is The One of prophecy. Morpheus explains it to Neo in this way: "When the Matrix was first built there was a man born inside that had the ability to change what he wanted, to remake the Matrix as he saw fit. It was this man who freed the first of us and taught us the truth - When he died, the Oracle prophesied his return and envisioned that his coming would hail the destruction of the Matrix." (The
