Many people look up to their fathers, and wish to be just like them when they grow up. Other people turn out just like their parents as said in the quote “like father, like son”. In both Fences, eloquently written by august Wilson, and the film, Sins of the Father directed by Robert Dorhelm, the characters feel animosity towards their fathers due to their sins. The character Cory, from the play Fences, was brutally affected by the actions done by his father, Troy. After his father, who told his football coach that he can’t play anymore, and crushed Cory’s hopes, and dreams, Cory says to his father “How come [he] aint ever liked me”(Wilson 37). Want to stand up in my face and ask a damn fool ass question like that, it’s my job. It’s my responsibility”. When Tom’s mom gets sick from cancer, due to the fact that Toms father was abusive to her, tom was left to take care of her, and giving her shots. When Tom helps to bathe his mother, she informs to her father, not to be like his father. This is ironic to tom because he watches each and every day his mother being abused, all beaten up by his dad and can’t stand it, and never wants to be a callous person like him. Lastly, When Tom’s dad leaves a black man that he hit by his car to die, as he hits the black man observing the situation, and tells his father to help the black man, his father angrily retorts “leave him there to die”. Since Bobby Cherry continues to do such harsh actions, his son is affected by his sins. As a result Tom grew up having the wrong sensations towards colored
