/18 Edgar Allan Poe’s stories deal with death, revenge and the subconscious of the human mind. This is however slightly different than the way Maupassant writes. His writings consist of irony and guilt. In the“The Cask of Amontillado” and "The Tell-Tale Heart," characters take revenge and try to justify their action based on their personal feelings. In “The Cask of Amontillado” Montresor carries out the ultimate revenge by burying Fortunato alive. In the "The Tell-Tale Heart," the narrator was haunted by his neighbor's eye, and decides to kill him in his sleep. In “The Confession” and “The Necklace” characters are overwhelmed with desire, which leads them to their destruction. After committing such acts, they drown in their own guilt and do all they can to fix it. Both of these extraordinary writers have influenced literature in their own unique way. In both the short stories, the mood is dark and gloomy. This is the representation of the gothic period in which majority of Poe’s writings takes place. The mood gives the reader a chilling feeling. Poe also has the theme of death in his stories. This could perhaps be because he incorporated his fears of death in the stories he wrote. These short stories could be a representation of Poe expressing his fears about being murdered and buried. Both “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Cask of Amontillado,” are written in first person narration. The murders were fabricated based on the narrator's perspective.
