The Cask of Amontillado is a sinister tale about betrayal and murder. It regards the life-altering changes that foolish pride and insult can cause. The story is narrated by Montressor, the protagonist, as he gets revenge on his old friend Fortunato. In this story, Montressor is depicted as a bitter, deceitful person as he takes advantage of the alcoholic Fortunato’s naive nature. The story leads us along Montressor’s cunning scheme for revenge. First devising a plan to “not only punish but punish with impunity.” Then catching a drunk Fortunato’s attention by exploiting his weakness; wine, specifically amontillado. Third, Montressor’s continually uses his excellent knowledge of psychology to entice Fortunato farther and farther into the catacombs, and finally, him executing Fortunato’s torturous death. The main similarities are between the plot and theme of the book and song. The song targets the main theme of the story; murder. The song title Cutthroat" refers to a murderer or the act of being ruthless; both synonyms are accurate descriptions of Montressor’s character. Although we do not know the “thousand injuries of Fortunato” they must have been insignificant enough to be easily overlooked by Fortunato in contrast to Montressor's murderous retribution. Furthermore, the song mentions “Only one of us gon' make it out alive and it's not you” which implies that the songwriter will kill “you”, similar to the finale of the book; Fortunato’s murder. The song lyrics are also strikingly similar to the plot of the book. The lyric, “I can't lie, I've been played” directly relates to the first line of the story,
