Let's say last night you dreamed you were in a fairytale. How would you describe it? Were there magical fairies, castles, golden objects, or talking animals? Did you slay a dragon, find true love, or save a princess? Common details that recur within a genre such as these are labeled genre Conventions, which can be used to enhance a text’s appeal or advance a moral.
I used to think genre was a category or a label that defined a written piece. My understanding relied exclusively on the format. However, when I read “Navigating Genres”, by Kerry Dirk, I realized how limited my understanding was. In his essay, Dirk wants his audience to challenge the misconceptions of genres in writing. Dirk exposes the reader to see writing through the lenses of genre theory and to conceptualize the benefits of genres in our rhetoric.
Until reading this Module, Module 2 in Writing About Texts – ENC1102 Spring 2018, did I ever think about genres in the manner it has been presented. Genre by my internal dictionary was applicable to a more focused aspect of a given method. As used in Kerry Dirk ’s essay “Navigating Genres”, country music by my definition is a genre of music like contemporary is a genre for design or better yet, abstract is a genre or style of art. Never once did I step back and think about communication at a higher level; the 30-thousand foot view as I like to think.
A genre is how a piece of writing is classified, this is can vary depending on who the reader is. A few examples of different types of genres include: persuasive, memoirs, comics, or blogs. A genre can be determined by many different elements. These elements are, style, design, audience, purpose, sources, and modes and medias. Style and design are similar when analyzing a piece.
The concentration is on comparing and finding the changes that history made to this movie genre, especially considering the gender roles. Results will clearly explain the psyche of society in two different periods, which confirms that people reflect the movies as movies have an impact on people. These codes can be shown as symbolic, written, audio and technical. Each one of these elements helps to categorised and helps to determine the genre. Conventions are what an audience typically expects from the genre. The producers and directors then in turn use what the audience expect in order to make the genre desired. Narrative conventions are the expected characters, settings, storylines and themes of a particular type of genre.
The six kinds of horror genre elements are suspense, foreshadowing, setting, source of horror and type of horror. For instance, let’s look over Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart and see how he uses an internal source of horror and suspense in his writing.
Genre conventions are small parts of the genre such as character similarities and the same plots that allow us to determine between genres. A lot of genres have elements that the audience expects which have been used other times in previous films from both genre/sub-genre. The two genre conventions that I selected from The Wizard of Oz, is musical and horror. A Musical is a good example to show the crossover illustration of the genre film. Musical films usually focus on songs as a major element, in a realistic setting.
Topic 1: Film genres Through the 1995 film “Clueless”, written and directed by Amy Heckerling, the idea that film genres are located in industry and texts and audiences is clearly shown. “Clueless” is an American typical romantic comedy. This film can be seen as a hybrid genre as it include different characteristics of two film genres. In this movie, elements of humour and romance are both illustrated by its generic formulas and story content. The film talked about the heroine Cher goes through her perplexed teenage and finally realizes she is interested in Josh, her stepbrother.
Over the past century, film has served as a powerful means of communication to a global audience and has become a vital part of the contemporary culture in a world that is increasingly saturated by visual content. Due to the immediacy and the all-encompassing nature of film, the process of watching a film, is widely perceived to be a passive activity by the general masses. However, quoting Smith in his article about the study of film, “nothing could be further from the truth.” The study and understanding of film as an art form enhances the way we watch and appreciate films. It requires the audience's active participation and interaction with the film in order to fully comprehend the directors' intention behind every creative decision.

Genre must allow us to see behind particular classifications (which change as our purposes change) and form (which trace but do not constitute genre). Genre entails purposes, participants, and themes, so understanding genre entails understanding a rhetorical and semantic situation and a social context. Recent conceptions of genre as a dynamic and semiotic construct illustrate how to unify form and content, place text within context, balance process and product, and acknowledge the role of both the individual and the social.
Each genre has distinct features that differentiate it from others, helping the reader better understand the author’s message. Occasionally, authors write novels that are classified as part of one genre, but conform to the conventions of other genres for varying purposes. For instance, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is classified as a romance, however it has conventions pertaining to the gothic genre. Such conventions include, the use of a gloomy atmosphere, the presence of supernatural occurrences and negative emotions being the main motivation for actions, all which The Scarlet Letter incorporates (The Gothic 2005).
Having come from the Latin word “genus”, meaning “type”, “genre” refers to style, when things, usually music or literary works, are grouped in collections of similar style. The function of genres in regards to literature is that “For readers, genres are sets of conventions and expectations: knowing whether we are reading a detective story or a romance… we are on the lookout for different things and make assumptions about what will be significant.” (Literary Theory: A Very Short Introduction) In the genre of detection fiction, readers would anticipate a murder in a seemingly locked room, a suspect being wrongly accused of the crime and a brilliant, intelligent protagonist detective with a less intelligent partner.
