The Panama Canal vs The Nicaragua Canal The Panama Canal and the Nicaragua Canal share and differ in many controversies that are very important to each or both countries or even to the world which may include: physical appearance, sovereignty within the country, political transparency, and feasibility.
The necessity to have a transcontinental path through the Americas has been one of the most important desires since the discovery of the continent. The possibility to transport resources and people easily was possible when Panama started the construction of their Canal. For a hundred years the Panama Canal has been the main route for ships to cross the continent of America. According to Matt Rosenberg in 2014, the 48-mile-long Panama Canal has created an important shortcut for ships going from New York to California, Europe to Asia or just simply from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean. It revolutionized the routes for transportation by being able to skip the journey around the tip of South America through Cape Horns, which is very dangerous, avoiding nearly 8,000 miles. The current locks are 33 meters wide, 304 meters long, and 12 meters deep, which can handle vessels 30 m wide, 294 m long and 10 m deep, and can handle ships with a maximum of 5,000 TEU. A third lane of locks is being built with one lock on each ocean. They will provide a capacity to handle vessels up to 49 meters wide, 366 meters long and 15 meters deep, or with a cargo volume of up to 12,000 TEU.
