Another part of the foreign policy that was motivated by economic reasons was the Panama Canal in 1903. The revolutionaries with Panama had the help of Theodore Roosevelt and declared independent from Colombia. Roosevelt aided in this was to “maintain free and uninterrupted transit across the Isthmus”. During this Panama gave US sovereign rights to a ten mile wide canal zone, which was open in 1904[1]. This canal was crucial to trade for America as from San Francisco to Liverpool saved around 42% time in the journey. This shows that whole assistance by Teddy Roosevelt for independence of Panama was caused by the trade improvements by this canal.
