Everyone knows what magic is and who knows what arcane mysteries you could do. But beware because some may regret what they wish for. In these two stories, The Monkey’s Paw by W.W. Jacobs and The Third Wish by Joan Aiken, the main characters are given three wishes to wish for anything they desire. However, they choose to wish for something they would regret. Throughout the two suspenseful stories, the characters will encounter similarities and differences in unforeseeable ways.

As they use up their wishes, one wish is helpful to them but then it also takes away something important. Relating to both the stories, they use one of the three wishes to protect their wife. Mr. Peters noticed that his wife is actually a swan.“Now he understood that Leita was really a swan from the forest, and this made him very sad because when a human being marries a bird it always leads to sorrow.”( ) The Third Wish. With that being said, he uses his second wish to turn her back into a swan so she can live happily with her sister. In The Monkey’s Paw, Mr. White wishes for 200 pounds but in return they lose their son, Herbert.
