Impacts on the Future

Peggy O’Mara once said, “The way we talk to our children starts to become their inner voice.” O’Mara states the results of many studies that have proven the way parents raise their children has a lasting impact on the child as a whole. In early 1971, a phycologist named Diana Baumrind studied the relationships of parents and their children. After extensive research, she came up with two main categories of parenting: authoritative and authoritarian. In this style, strict rules are arranged and the expectations for success are very high. Parents usually set punishments with slim explanations and are very harsh or cold when it comes to hearing the children’s side of the story. The children in this setting do not experience much warmth or nurturing, which usually turns them to rebellion later on in life. Children do not get options and choices on what they are involved in, but are compelled to be in activities that their parents have enforced upon them. The effects of this kind of parenting are endless. Many children at a young age may start to associate obedience with love and nutriment, because the only way a child gets this is when he or she exceeds the parent’s expectations. With the lack of love, children may start to have a lower self-esteem and have difficulty making friends outside of their family. Many of these children often show more aggressive behavior towards others because this behavior is all that they have been shown throughout their entire lives.
