With Ghana having GDP per capita of $1,858 it would classify them being in the low income group ($596-$4,543) but many would group them in another class being the low-middle income group ($1,046 to $4,125). Comparing to the USA, who has a GDP per capita of $53,042 Ghana is extremely behind, they would need to increase their GDP per capita by $51,184 to catch up to the United States. China is classified in the Middle income group with a GDP per capita of $6,807 with Ghana only falling behind them by $4,949. Ghana seems to be doing comparatively well when you stack it up next to their neighboring country of TOGO whose GDP per capita is a dismal $590 almost half as less as Ghana. Another contributing factor is the lack of machinery available in farming, forestry and mining that is too expensive for the people of Ghana and secondary jobs are almost obsolete (Geography.learnontheinternet.co.uk). Ghana’s primary sector economy follows a “particular pattern amongst many low-income countries who have an abundance of non-renewable natural resources that Geographers refer to as “The Resource Curse”.
