A work of literature that has unsettled me is Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. This caused me to stir with strong unsettling emotion because of the way that the novel ended. Near the end of the story, a mentally deficient man, Lennie accidently murders a young woman. He was simply trying to quiet her. She was so scared from his attentions that she had started screaming. In his mind, he was just admiring her beauty. Her reaction to him, scared him and in his mind, he was simply trying to calm her. In his efforts, he chokes her. He has not meant to do so and he is instantly confused as to why she won’t respond to him when he speaks to her. He does not comprehend the magnitude of his actions.
