Compare and Contrast In both the textbook lesson and the one I created on my own, I found that there needed to be a lot of flexibility when I actually taught the lesson. I found that the lesson I had initially been planning on teaching did not line up with my students needs and strengths. For the textbook lesson, this was more prominent because this lesson was not made with my student in mind and I had to make adjustments to the lesson to make something that he might understand. These adjustments were effective in the end because I did not know my students' prior knowledge of number lines and had overestimated his ability and had to rethink the approach to the entire lesson. The lesson that I created was made for my student and I designed …show more content…
I did not like the learning goal of the textbook lesson which was to "review basic number line concepts; and to provide practice counting on the number line". I was not a big fan of this goal because of how vague it was. I took that goal and revised it to having my student better understand the number line by using it to count by 2's and 10's. I chose to include these two numbers because, from the initial interview with my student, I knew that he was able to count by 10's but was not able to count up by 10's from 34 which shows his lack of full understanding. The learning goal from the book proved to be difficult to work with and, even after I changed it, forced me to make adjustments the lesson to remain focused on the learning goal. When I created my own lesson plan, I was able to come up with my own goal that was focused around my student and what best for him to learn. My lesson goal for the second visit was by the end of this lesson, my student will have a full understanding of the equal sign and will be able to identify is if the equal sign is used correctly. My goal for my own lesson is also a bit vague but I believe that it worked out well because I had a more in depth understanding of my lesson and what my students needed to get from it. I think having the freedom of creating my own learning goal helped me in building the lesson because it reminded me of what was important for my student to
