Ferdinand and Isabella Spain is one of the world’s major powers and has been for a long time. However, before Ferdinand and Isabella, the country of Spain did not even exist. They united two kingdoms together to form the country of Spain. In addition, Ferdinand and Isabella led the Spanish Reconquista which drove the Muslims out of Spain and established Spain as a strong military force. They also made Spain a religious power with the Spanish Inquisition which was a set of laws that was designed to to keep Orthodox Catholicism in their kingdom. Under Ferdinand and Isabella, Spain also funded many explorations, and they claimed and discovered many new lands. Their explorations led to many naval and navigational accomplishments. The Inquisition was good for Spain for many reasons. The main reason was religious unity in their country. The monarchs had the ability to intervene in any religious matters, whether it be Christian or non-Christian. Ferdinand and Isabella also had the idea of efficient economic, political, social and militaristic systems. Unity in religion successfully did that for them. The Inquisition also reduced local opposition to the monarchs. It strengthened the central government which gave way to less local oppression. The Inquisition also gave religious minorities less power because Catholicism was the law. Lastly, the Inquisition was a very lucrative system for Ferdinand and Isabella, and therefore Spain. One of the punishments for not being Catholic was confiscation of property. Because of the high number of Muslims, Jews, and Protestants, a lot of land and wealth were confiscated for Spain. Ferdinand and Isabella used the Spanish Inquisition to make Spain one of the biggest and most powerful Catholic countries in Europe.
