To try and gain recognition can be a daunting task, especially if it determines one’s livelihood until death. In both “Lose Yourself” and “The Necklace,” both writers illustrate stories about an individual going through a defining moment in their lives. An opportunity arises for both individuals to make a name for themselves, which neither of them have ever seen in their life times. Both of them try to conform to others and impress during their prime, but choke in their efforts.
In the short story “The Necklace”, a young, middle-class woman by the name of Mme Louise has the chance to go to an exclusive upper-class party. Since she knows that she is not usually invited to such things, Mme Louise wants to impress the other attendees. Therefore, she buys an elaborate and expensive dress, but still feels as though something is missing. She then borrows a friend’s diamond necklace to go to the party. First, Eminem states “ A normal life is borin’, but super stardom’s close to post mortem,” which is exactly what Mme loisel thinks because she wants to be rich. Then, Eminem says “If you had one shot, one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment, would you capture it or just let it slip?” Mme Loisel had the same opportunity when she was invited to a party with wealthy citizens. Since she did not want to let her chance to slip, she bought a 400 franc dress and borrowed a diamond necklace. After Mme Loisel loses the diamond necklace she borrowed, her life was changed forever. The couple had to pay off 36,000 francs, only to find out that the diamonds were fake. When the song says “And these times are so hard, and it’s getting even harder,” it relates by the fact that Mme Loisel and her husband were already on a fixed income, and having to pay for a necklace to replace the one she lost made it even more
