The main characters in Jane Yolen’s story “Suzy and Leah” is Suzy and Leah. Leah is a girl in a refugee camp while Suzy is a girl outside of the camp. At first, their relationship was not very strong, but throughout the story it evolves. Eventually, Leah and Suzy find out what a friendship is like. Throughout the story, Leah and Suzy both have mixed feelings toward each other. When they first saw each other they both thought the other one was creepy. They did not have very good feelings about each other. Suzy was outside of the camp trying to help Leah but she would not accept it. Suzy would bring her food and candy, but she would not take it. When Leah was put in school to learn more English, Suzy was her tutor; they both did not like that. Suzy thought that Leah was mean because she would never smile at her, but Leah thinks Suzy is treating her like a pet even though she is trying to help. Suzy decided to invite Leah over for supper and after that things changed. Leah became ill and did not show up at school the next day; she went to the hospital to get her appendix removed. They were judging each other without even knowing them. Leah did not know anything about Suzy and Suzy did not know anything about Leah. They did not know anything about the other person's history and what they went through. That was part of why they were not friends and did not like each other. Even with everything Suzy was doing for Leah, they never became closer as friends. When Suzy read Leah’s diary, she found out what she went through and understood why shy was mean and why she would not accept help.
