Having an educational structure from a different background makes me feel unique due to my upbringing. Being born in Africa, our parents believe in "spare the rod spoil the child". This meaning no wrong goes unpunished as well as no good deed remains unrewarded. Moving to the states at an early age was an advantage for them to send me back to Kenya, my homeland where I did part of my education. Having started school in the U.S. life was completely different from how we did it in Kenya. The education system in Kenya is much harder than what I did in the U.S. Good grades are being emphasized to us from the early age of 6 years old. the education system was difficult but I made it my goal to adapt quickly and get my studies started. My Principal was excited to have me here and I had just finished my second year in high school back in Africa and I was to be headed to the 11th grade. But the grading and schooling system in Kenya was totally different from what the Americans do. It was in the beginning of the second semester and I had already missed the first semester. My principal as well as school counselor had decided to place me in 10th grade. I was not ready to settle for a year back, I managed to convince her to let me join 11th grade and I will work my way up to recover all the missing credits I needed in order to graduate. I passed with straight A's in that semester and was ready for quite a hefty summer. I registered for dual credit classes at the University of Texas in Arlington where I did US History before 1865 and Rhetoric and Composition 1. That was to make up for my half missed US History and English 3 credits.
