The movie Her directed by Spike Jonze covers topics of humanity like isolation, loneliness, connections, and complex emotions. Theodore Twombly is the main character who is described as antisocial; he is a letter writer who writes personal letters for other people when he writes these letters it helps express his emotions. Him and his wife broke up and he is in the process of a divorce and while in this process he begins a relationship with an OS system named Samantha. At the beginning of their relationship they are friends who begin to love each other and as Samantha’s needs and desires grow their relationship deepens. Complex emotions are also prevalent like Alymers deep internal conflict about Georgiannas birthmark and what it truly symbolizes. Complex emotions are also throughout Her. Towards the end of the movie Samantha tells Theodore that she asked herself “why do I even love you?” she continues on to say that she didn’t need a real specific reason just to love him because she just did. Love is a complex emotion for many reasons but a good representation of that being her description of why she doesn’t need a good reason. Being human has many different qualities that nobody could really ever describe one of them though is being able to feel and accept complex emotions which is something that Samantha did in the movie. She described multiple times throughout the entirety that it was something that she would never expect to really do or that it wasn’t something that she was supposed to be doing. Imperfection is another quality of being human as being imperfect and having flaws makes it so that your humanity and your raw and natural self exists. That is shown through Theodore, he has many flaws and imperfections but that is what makes him human.
