In modern society, variety of religions are spread in different countries, each represents its own concepts and uniqueness. Also, there are certain theories and mindsets that are valuable among numerous religions. The aim of this academic paper is to investigate the concept of “purity” in Buddhism and Judaism by discussing three components: (1) Background of Buddhism and Judaism; (2) Concepts of purity in Buddhism and Judaism; and (3) Relation between purity and life among Buddhism and Judaism. The impact and implications in this paper provides a basic background knowledge of Buddhism and Judaism as well as the concepts of purity among these two religions.

If we need to understand fully about Buddhism, get to know the start of this religion may help us along the way. It originated with the story of prince Siddhartha Gautama, who borne in Lumbini Nepal on present day at around 2500 years ago (Knierim, 2002). When he was borne, it was believed that a great sage came down from a mountain and told his father King Suddhodana that Siddhartha would either become an emperor or a Buddha. The king insisted that his son would become a great emperor thus he surrounded him with a luxury life. Reaching the age of 30, Siddhartha decided to leave his palace and was exposed to a scene where he first experienced human suffering. Since then he was keen on solving the issue of human suffering and he travelled in India for years, looking for the “solution”. Finally, he came across to a tree in Northern India and he meditated under the tree until he got enlightened. Shortly after a month, he became fully enlightened and was known as The Buddha (Harvey, 2012) (Knierim, 2002). In laymen knowledge, Buddhism could be another traditional religion. According to an introduction of Judaism in 2000, The United Sates had the most Jewish population in the world, with approximately 5.7 million of Jewish people. In addition, Christianity in fact grew out of Judaism from the 1st century on as well as Jesus and all his followers were Jewish. Jewish uses the same Bible as Christians do nowadays except the New Testament, unlike other religions, majority of the Jewish people do not believe in Jewish religion but on the other hand they would consider themselves as Jews. For example, if people ask Jewish people (Jews) “why are you a Jew?”, most of the Jews would answer “Because I was born a Jew” (Batnitzky, 2011). Judaism does not focus on the afterlife like some of the other religions, it mainly focuses on how human beings live their present life. Since the “Jew identify” from each Jew mainly comes from birth, the family plays a huge role on implementing the identity as well as the “Jewish concepts” to their next generations.
