In the eighth grade, my friends and I joined a program called History Day, completely on a whim. We had no experience and we barely knew what the program was, but we were very excited to try something new. When we got started on our project, we decided to do a performance on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911. Out of the five of us, not one person had done a historical performance before, and so with no experience we began our research. As we learned everything there was to learn about this event, we became more and more passionate about the topic.

I’m gonna talk about the book “Night” that we have read in class during the second term. The story has for setting the time period of the WWII, in Europe. The story is about Elie, a jew and his family that are facing a lot of struggles because of their religion. Over the course of the book, Elie changes from believing in God to not believe in God. This is important to the book as a whole because it connects to the internal conflict.
When I joined AVID in seventh grade I was amazed how AVID works and how it can be used every day. Not only AVID helps you with your grades, but it also helps you to be more organized and a hard-working student. AVID helped me discover my full potential by showing me that I can always do better. What I mean by this is that in sixth grade I was not in AVID, I made all A’s and B’s. In seventh grade when I was in AVID, I made all A’s.
As I am quickly approaching the end of my senior, I am looking back at how far I have come since freshman year and everything that Henley High School has helped me accomplish in my life. In preparation for the life that every senior must experience after school, the senior capstone project was put in place to help seniors find out what they would suit them as career and give them some of the necessary tools in achieving that. Part of the capstone was earning service hours at a non profit organization, that can go on a resume. With serving came a facilitator, who guides one’s service, and also the challenges and success of the service itself. To Provide help on future careers, Henley High School also provided an opportunity to take the CIS test
Ramapo Mountain would have been one of the first racially integrated communities in the United States. Sadly, in 1972 the project was rejected. Although the Civil Rights Act had been passed eight years prior, the country as a whole was not yet ready for radical change. My grandfather, the man behind Ramapo Mountain, has always told me that true transformation takes years; and that truism has borne itself out in my high school career. Ninth grade was a particularly difficult year for me, both academically and personally.
The first time I noticed Mike Newton, I was at the campus dining hall completing my community service. Miss Porter’s School required all students to do ten hours of volunteer work each week. According to the program director, Mr. Banner, it gave us the opportunity not only to prepare for college but also, experience firsthand the joy and sense of purpose that comes from serving others. I had undoubtedly won the placement lottery and been given the prestigious job of kitchen duty at our school’s cafeteria. Ten hours each week, I scrubbed tables, filled salt shakers, helped take inventory, and completed any other menial tasks that needed doing.
I initially signed up for Seton High School’s Tri-Health Summer Job Program during my freshman year. I viewed this eight-week, paid mentorship at the hospital as a great way to make a little money before college. I didn’t realize that this program would change my life forever. That first summer, I worked in the logistics department. I expected this assignment to be very mundane and boring, but it was anything but that.
In this portfolio you will see some of the works that I have done during my first quarter at Cal Poly. Completing these assignments was no easy task. It took hard work, dedication, motivation, and perseverance to overcome some of the obstacles that I encountered. Following, I will outline some of the difficulties I had with each project, how I overcame them, and lessons learned.
I had run for the position, believing I would do what was best for my class. In the beginning, I was excited having conjured a plethora of ideas, ready to enact and perform them all. The very first meeting I walked in chest puffed out and a smile on my face. The class sponsor started the meeting, asking if any of us had any ideas. Open Season had begun!
Throughout my whole life, the California Academy of Sciences has served as a source of inspiration. I really appreciate how the Academy and its staff are extremely dedicated to science and try their absolute best to help educate and motivate the public. I also appreciate that the Academy frequently updates its exhibits to bring in fresh scientific material to keep the public interested. The Academy has also fueled my interest in science from a young age. I used to go to the old Academy in Golden Gate Park before it was renovated and I was fascinated by the dinosaur exhibits that were displayed.
The morning of my first day, I was terrified, but also profoundly excited. My mother had beamed about Miami High’s immense school spirit. She had been an alumni herself. I already had a club I wanted to join in mind, even before I saw the list: Honoria. She had been part of Honoria for all four years of her high school experience in the 1980’s and told me about it.
In his novel, the prince, nicolo machiavelli guides us to be a fruitful ruler. He clarifies the best routes for any ruler or sovereign to govern a region, bring prosper to the society, and keep up their position. This book can be read by anyone to get a few pointers on political issues. Most of the thoughts held by machivelli were linked to mercilessness and evil, hence they raised a considerable number of eyebrows. He maintains that the ruler 's primary goal should be conquering, staying in control of the general public and to always have the idea of war in mind.
Everyone belongs to a social class. Whatever reality you been born in, is going to shape the way you believe and act. Each individual is different and unique, however, is not unknown that the experiences we had over our life shape our identity. In the movie Elysium, the Earth has been contaminated. The rich people flew away to a new land created in the space named Elysium, which left those with less money behind.
Monuments Men is a fairly recent film with the premise of a group of soldiers during World War II tasked with protecting the artwork within the continental Europe from those who want to take it. It primarily centers on the story of Frank Stokes, played by George Clooney, and how he is able to assemble a ragtag group of “soldiers” and actually enter the frontlines. Over the course of the story, the group loses a few members, but do manage to discover the stashes of art hidden by Hitler and save it from destruction, including the Ghent Altarpiece and the Lady Madonna. Despite having already watched this movie, is still struck me how much the movie’s message still resonated with me. The movie makes a clear case for the value of art, and I feel
