Recently there has been major protest throughout the United States both for and against the removal of the Confederate Civil War Statues and monuments. In this essay, we will discuss several reasons why these historical statues and monuments should not be removed. These reasons include; understanding the significance of these statues in relation to American history, viewing them as works of art, and the financial cost of removal and storage of each one of these statues. Whether we like it or not, history will always have good and bad times, and these statues represent part of our American historical landscape. According to the non-profit organization Civil War Trust website, an organization which is dedicated to the preservation of America's hallowed battlegrounds, the American Civil War (1861-1865) was one of the most important events in the history of this nation. The results of this war were the deaths many soldiers, from both the north and south, however, they were all seen as heroes (Civil War Trust, n.d.). The war divided this nation by involving the Union Army of the North and the Confederate Army of the South. There was a big questioning of what kind of nation the U.S. should be, with the root of the problem being, the differences between free states and slave states to abolish slavery in territories that were not established as states yet (McPherson, n.d.). The South wanted to create a new, separate nation based on white supremacy and free slave labor. On the other hand, the North wanted a society based on equal rights and the abolishment of slavery.
