Before and after the Civil War, people loved and respected Robert E. Lee. Not because of the side he fought for, but because he was an honorable man with strong beliefs; as a general he was a fatherly leader his soldiers looked up to; and he was a very clever tactician. Although Lee fights for the Confederacy, many people greatly revered him, even to this day. Robert E. Lee showed how honorable he was when he chose to fight for his home state of Virginia over the United States. He joined the Confederacy because his “mother” state would be fighting with the Confederacy.

However, it is debateable about his contributions because of Robert Lee’s association in the Civil War (1861-1865) to the Confederate Army that fought for the Southern States. Robert Lee lead many successful campaigns and battles including the following; helping defeat Mexican armies that lead to U.S land gains and westward expansion, battles against a more powerful army in the Civil War. Despite these achievements Lee’s loyalty for the Confederate Army that fought to uphold slavery undermines his success and is highly debateable about whether his contribution is justified or not. It is well known that the Civil War is one of the worst manmade disasters to happen on American soil. Many know when it ended, 1865, and it safe to say that almost all Americans know who the victor was. While the Union Army may have won the Civil War, it can be argued that they lost the War of Reconstruction. After the war, racial tensions are at an all-time high as newly freed slaves divide the South into two groups. The first would be the people who want to hold on to how southern society was before the war, they are still loyal to the ideas of the Confederacy.
Six hundred thousand people died in the Civil War, a shocking figure which doesn't really capture the toll that this sort of violence took on the country at large. and this statement The Civil War is our revolution. It ended slavery, and birthed both modern America, and modern black America. just both be true, simultaneously, without negating each other?
Civil War In the year of 1861, on April 12th, a tremendous war broke out between the north and the south. While both sides fought the Civil War over the issue of slavery, the North fought for moral reasons and the South fought to preserve its current beliefs and policies. It all started when George Washington was elected to be president.
The Unions Advantages The Civil War was a war between the Union and the Confederacy with the North named the Union also known as the Yankees or Yanks for short. The Union had many advantages including a bigger population included nearly 21 million people. Secondly, the Union also had an industrial advantage at the time as it produced 97 percent of the country’s firearms, 96 percent of its railroad locomotives, 94 percent of its cloth, 93 percent of its pig iron, and over 90 percent of its boots and shoes. Thirdly, the Union Controlled the seas and they also had well-developed railroads including 21,000 miles of railroad track which provided fresh supplies of arms, men, equipment, horses, and medical supplies on direct routes to the army's camping
The reason is not that civilized countries are so averse to hurting people that they prefer “purely military” wars. (Nor were all of the participants in these wars entirely civilized.) The reason is apparently that the technology and geography of war- fare, at least for a war between anything like equal powers dur- ing the century ending in World War II, kept coercive violence from being decisive before military victory was achieved. Blockade indeed was aimed at the whole enemy nation, not concentrated on its military forces; the German civilians who died of influenza in the First W orld W ar were victims of violence directed at the whole country.
I will start with the Union and the Confederates putting up a massive fight. One of the advantages that the Confederates had was they were fighting on the defensive side. But a downside was that they acted as aggressors against the union because they had to protect and preserve the boundaries. Also, something interesting about the war was that it falls mostly in the South which was a huge advantage to the Confederates because they already knew the battleground. The Confederates even had the opportunity to block the coastline.
Should monuments be removed? For many years people have been arguing whether certain controversial monuments, such as statues, should be destroyed or removed. A common type of monuments in this situation are the Confederacy monuments. These are various statues across the US which honor Confederate leaders or “heroes”. Many see these offensive since those people basically oppressed African Americans for years and were fighting to keep doing so.
For instance, Confederate monuments would allow generations to see that America isn’t “a place reserved for people who still want to spit our country, but rather a place for education that we can learn from the ugly protraction of our history” (Lanktree). Often, we talk about learning from the past so that the same mistakes won’t occur in the future. This specifically can be represented through these monuments; by having a symbol of the past where racism occurred, it serves as a reminder of what discrimination can do when one side is filled with bigotry. Having a place where one can learn about the effects of someone’s wrongdoings can allow today’s people to decide for themselves the future they want to create. Additionally, the author of the article Keep Confederate monuments, but put their horrific history on stage describes how Americans have been “willfully blind” about racial justice and that the statues could be used as reminders of the “catastrophic consequences” (Cose).
Mississippi’s declaration goes so far as to say that “a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization.” (Hanson) During the time period, African Americans were slaves for the white man. Picking crops, and doing whatever the master said. If they didnt they were punished severely. The confederate battle flag is seriously a problem in America.
