Conflict is a major thing in real life as well as literature, in real life it’s a daily occurrence. In literature, conflict keeps readers hooked and gives the story meaning. The conflict in “The Sniper” is a great way to keep the reader's attention, Liam O'Flaherty wrote the conflict for “The Sniper” so that every second there was more suspense. In “The Sniper” the author, Liam O’Flaherty, develops and resolves a great conflict by showing that the sniper had been found, the sniper trying to find a way to get out alive, and tricking the other sniper. “Taking off his cap, he placed it over the muzzle of his rifle. Then he pushed his rifle slowly upward over the parapet, until the cap was visible from the opposite side of the street.”(O’Flaherty 8) He is setting up the opposing sniper, making him think that the sniper is aiming for a shot. This shows a fall in conflict because he is making the sniper think the way he wants him too. “... thought that he had killed his man. He was now standing before a row of chimney pots… The Republican sniper smiled and lifted his revolver above the edge of the parapet… He took a steady aim… His enemy had been hit… The body turned over and over in space and hit the ground with a dull thud. Then it lay still.”(O’Flaherty 9) The sniper successfully killed his opponent. This shows a fall in conflict because he defeated the other sniper and could go back to his base. The conflict has concluded. The conflict starts with the sniper being found, rises with the sniper trying to escape, and ends with the sniper tricking the opposing sniper.
