Many religions have their own concept of social ordering in terms of class and an individual's role in society but some are just as similar to each other as they are different. A prime example of this is classical Hinduism and classical Confucianism. They are nothing similar in how social order plays a strong role in maintaining a stable society and how the highest class can help the other classes. On the other hand, they differ in how one can move on the social ladder, how social class has an effect on reaching the highest ideal, and how much power each class has. For example, when it comes to moving up the social ladder, it is more difficult to do so in Hinduism. In Hinduism, there are Four Varnas that emerged from Purusha, the ‘Cosmic Man’ and the original sacrificial victim. The four classes are the Brahmins, the Kshatriyas or “warriors,” the Vaishyas or “merchants,” and the shudras or “servants.” Even lower than this are the “untouchables” and in one was born into their occupation which one was expected to practice because that was their social duty. On the other hand, in Confucianism moving up the social ladder is easier because Confucius rejected the idea of nobility by birth. Nobility is instead gained perfecting oneself morally Wichita is known as Junzi. Another difference is how social class effects reaching the highest ideal. For example, in Hinduism spiritual training was usually available to upper-caste males because they were considered twice born and were able to go through the Four Stages of Life. However, in Confucianism reaching moral attainment was something that all can reach. Lastly, when it comes to power Confucianism allows the common people to take away the authority of a ruler if they become lazy, inept, corrupt, or despotic.
