In this weeks case study on the Osoyoos Indian Band and Application of Okanagan Leadership Principles, I have chosen to speak about the four topics of leadership, role models, the ways meetings have evolved, and engagement within the indigenous community. As a Navajo Nation and Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota member, I grew up mostly in or around the reservation. I have experienced the troubles that many citizens have such as poverty, substance abuse, and unemployment. Therefore, making connections to points made by Ethan Baptiste in this case study was not challenging. The first connection I would like to make is that leadership represented in this case study is presented in the chief, it says that they put they the people before themselves, even before themselves.
Louis Armstrong, universally known as Satchmo, was born into extreme poverty in August, 1901 in New Orleans, Louisiana. His first contact with music was in a reformatory for abandoned children when he was admitted to the band for good behavior. Soon he learned to play the bugle, clarinet, horn, and began to familiarize himself with the trumpet from the informal lessons he received from jazz musician King Oliver. He never had a real music lesson and, until seventeen years old, lacked the money to buy his own musical instrument. Even though Armstrong did not learn to read music until he was over twenty, he was a musical genius and his talents were groundbreaking.
Through the National Student Leadership Conference, I will be marching out of my comfort zone and learning qualities that will aid me in becoming a better leader. In my school there are numerous leadership opportunities, from being class president, to being a house captain, to planning a school wide event.
I want to be a leader of the Prosper High School Band because I want to help set the standards for the coming years and help those who have trouble organizing their time/ schedule throughout the marching season and the 2018- 2019 school year. As well as help them gather their thoughts about a specific subject or issue. If I am not chosen as a leader in the next semester, my daily do’s and participation will not be affected. I will strive to be the best that I can, until the end of my high school career.
Any good program needs a strong leadership team, and I have always wanted to be a strong leader because I love helping others be their very best. In our marching band program our section leaders are called FOG (For Others Greatness), they are chosen not only for their musicality but also for their ability to work with and guide others. The section leaders during my freshman year were incredible and I longed to be just like them when I was finally able to apply and audition for the position. I am on the color guard and do not play an instrument during the marching season, therefore my color guard skills would need to be at an elevated level in comparison to those of my peers. As the audition portion of the application came about I worked diligently
Throughout the past two years as a member of the Flyer Marching Band, I have had opportunities to develop myself as an efficient worker in a group environment, become comfortable with having leadership roles, and to understand what it truly means to be a veteran marcher. During my few years with the marching band, I have also been through two seasons experiencing others’ leadership, some people being more effective towards their respective sections than others. I have taken what I have learned about marching band and the work ethic that goes into a successful leader and as I drew closer to this point, applying for section leader, I began to formulate my own set of ideals that a section leader should strive to achieve; a section leader should
While I have not officially held any leadership roles, I consistently influence my peers to uphold school ideals. I am also dependable in being able to accept any responsibilities asked of me by my teachers. Furthermore, I strive to lead
I have worked in many leadership roles in the past, which include dealing with both children and young adults that has caused me to build a huge amount of patience. I am a very confident and optimistic woman who is very encouraging and will push anyone to their full potential. I am able to adapt to many different situations and able to interact with a wide variety of personalities. I am a very dedicated and passionate person, who puts their all into everything they do. I have mediated conflicts before, as well as delegated for those who have felt they had no voice.
I am very confident and consider myself a good leader. I initiate discussions in the classrooms and help those in need. I value responsibility, accountability, and timeliness. Rising above expectations is something I strive for, such as going to early morning choir practices for Chamber Choir and Triple Trio. Last year, I was president of the freshman class.
When it comes to leadership, I feel more than qualified and that comes from being able to take initiative while being kind. Though some
I am still looking for more opportunities to show my leadership and through NHS, I am hopeful I can accomplish that. One moment that showed my role as a leader, was mentoring the younger team of a sport I came to love recently. Lacrosse has become a passion of mine in a short period, I devote many hours to the sport to become an advert team player. I started building connections and friendships with younger players; we both would connect on the sport as I showed my love for it, and being able to help them out. Another leadership role that I demonstrate is being the section leader for my orchestra class.
I am a “leader” many ways in and out of school. In school I am in Environmental, Interact, Journalism, Elementary Connections, and Student Council clubs. I also hold offices in three of these clubs. I am Vice President of Student Council and Secretary in both Journalism and Environmental clubs. I am also involved with Youth Leadership; we go on monthly field trips around the county to learn about leadership roles in the community.
I was only a few days in when I stepped back and noticed something, all the leaders were missing out on other opportunities. They were consumed with responsibilities and so narrow minded towards band that most of them were missing the fun times outside of their narrow vision. When they were given new opportunities outside of band they mostly ignored them because they only had one thing on their mind. It made me realize that all the duties I’ve done for band had given me more opportunities to be a new different leader around the school. By not being a leader in the band I was allowed to see them.
I have leadership skills that are portrayed at school, at church and at after school activities. I also should be in it because of my strong character and how I can work in a team. I have never gotten a MRI or an ODR, always thinking about helping others and cheering them up. Also I try to be a good influence on everyone by behaving and being gentle. Also, I like helping my team and treating everyone equally.
Acquiring leadership skills along with a strong character and the sense to serve others is vital. A leader should be resourceful, dependable, selfless, and a good problem solver. I have led in many ways- inside and outside of school. Last year as a tenth grader, I was class secretary for Class Council.
