I stood seven steps from the start line, hands sweaty and lips trembling. It seemed as if at any moment I would break the position of attention: feet at a forty-five degree angle, knees slightly bent, chin just above the horizon, and shoulders up, back, and down. Though I always dreamed of representing the Benicia High School Panther Band as their drum major, the lone figure in front of the block of blue and gold wearing a white British uniform and a brown bearskin hat, it never occurred to me that I was finally there. There was no way I could not be nervous; it was the last marching practice before my first competition in my career. Nevertheless, there was no escape.
My greatest strengths as a leader include, the ability to differentiate between the time to have fun and when it's time to buckle down and get things done. As a leader, I am assertive and can make sure people will know their place without causing any unnecessary conflict within the band. As an officer, i will help get the band prepared for state by putting in multiple hours of 1 on 1 sessions with members that might be struggling or lacking in correct marching techniques; this will hopefully become a staple for future officers of the band and would really improve the footwork and playing ability of future members. Being a member of the band, i have put in multiple hours of my time to practice and perfect the music that is given to me. I have never missed a practice or rehearsal unless my absence was caused by a medical or family issues.
Through the National Student Leadership Conference, I will be marching out of my comfort zone and learning qualities that will aid me in becoming a better leader. In my school there are numerous leadership opportunities, from being class president, to being a house captain, to planning a school wide event.
When I ended my sophomore year, I felt as if I was on top of the world. My grades were top tier, I had a successful soccer season, and I had just been assigned the drum major position in my school’s marching band. However about halfway through the following summer, I was diagnosed with depression. Instead of trying to fight through my condition, I allowed myself to slink deeper and deeper into an abyss. I knew that in my tenure as drum major, I would need to have a stable mind in order to be effective and have a possible impact on the band
I want to be section leader because I think I am the best candidate to help the group. I believe this because of what I bring to the band, I have preset goals, and I have a plan to achieve them. I believe I bring many strengths and weaknesses to the group. My main strengths are in leadership and marching. Leadership is a strength of mine because over the past few summers I have lead sectionals in Summer Music Experience.
While I have not officially held any leadership roles, I consistently influence my peers to uphold school ideals. I am also dependable in being able to accept any responsibilities asked of me by my teachers. Furthermore, I strive to lead
Why do you want to become Section Leader? The reason I want to become section leader is because I want to be able to influence the incoming freshman that way they get an understanding of what is expected of them. I also want to be able to set a tone for next years band and try to discourage negativity and promote positivity. By being a section leader freshman to seniors could learn the kind of attitude and behavior they should have.
I am very confident and consider myself a good leader. I initiate discussions in the classrooms and help those in need. I value responsibility, accountability, and timeliness. Rising above expectations is something I strive for, such as going to early morning choir practices for Chamber Choir and Triple Trio. Last year, I was president of the freshman class.
To the average person, the high school marching band is nothing more than a bunch of geeks that play during half time at the football games or monopolize the benches by the band hall, but to me, it is so much more. To me it is a family, a safe haven, a creative outlet, a home. I have been involved in marching band for three years, going on four, and I wouldn 't trade the experience for anything. When I entered high school as a scared and awkward freshman, I immediately had three hundred people that I could rely on. The program quickly became like a second home to me and opened up a whole new path in my life.
As someone who has been on Vision since my Freshman year of high school, I am so excited to be trying out for leadership! Vision means a lot to me because I have grown so much as a person, made lifelong friends, and learned what it really means to be part of a group. I know that my experience here has been largely shaped by my student leaders, which is why I would love the opportunity to serve VHS Band in this capacity. I feel I would be a strong choice for Dance Captain because I am a good mediator, an experienced leader, and friendly and outgoing.
This organization has about three hundred and fifty students in it and to become a squad leader, you must submit an application, a resume and prove you are in good standing with your grades and school attendance. In addition, there is an interview process by the band directors and you must also have teacher recommendations. This leadership role requires being an outstanding role model for my peers, helping the band directors and others when needed and representing the organization wherever I go. As a section leader, it is my responsibility to lead a group of students and work with them teaching them be the best marchers they could be so that they could fulfill their goal of being in one of the best marching bands in Texas!
If I could continue anything i did in high school I would join the michigan marching band. Marching band in high school has been a way for me to meet new people. One of my favorite marching bands for me too watch has always been the Michigan band I would love too take part in it. One of my requirements for school has been a marching band or a pep band and a large marching band like Michigan's would be very preferable. Musical Goals: As a PhD student at Duke aspiring to have an academic career, I'd like to pursue music as a serious hobby on the side. I am currently writing/recording a short album (about fifteen to twenty minutes long) and plan to have it published on Bandcamp and YouTube before next May. For live shows, I'll rearrange the songs or write new material that can be performed by a three or four piece band. Two ten to twenty minute shows for students at venues on campus or charity events before next Fall seems to be a realistic goal.
At the end of junior year, a majority of the upperclassmen band members send in applications to become the next leaders of the band during marching season. These leaders are the role models that, as an upcoming senior, I intended to join. I couldn’t understand how I couldn’t get it. I spent hours after performances unloading supplies. I had perfect attendance for every afterschool practice since freshmen year and always turned everything in on time.
Throughout my high school career, I was forced into many situations where I was challenged to connect with my peers and serve as a role model for future students. Whether it be my involvement in the school marching band, or helping students in community tutoring sessions, I have always made it my goal to better the people around me through my own efforts. Throughout my high school career, I have put forth my best effort to connect with my peers, transform individuals, and make a difference in my community. Joining the school marching band at the beginning of my freshman year of high school was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
