I am, as of a December 2015, a third year participating member of the Southern Pride Marching Band here at Georgia Southern University. Music and the performing arts plays a huge role in my life, as it has given me the opportunity to travel and perform at various venues around the country. I have also met most of my closest friends through music, sharing experiences that I will cherish for years to come. Since my freshman year of high school, my skill as a percussionist has continued to grow. This past summer, in fact, I was presented with opportunity to march with Alliance Drum and Bugle Corps.
The AVID program has had a positive impact in my academics, and in my life by helping me focus, enrich, and solidify my goals. I can say with full confidence that AVID has become an integral part of my High School year that equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in college. As an immigrant who came to the United States five years ago and English being my third language, the AVID program challenged me to think critically and strive to learn more. Personality wise, there are major changes that I observed once I joined the program.
Many people come across roadblocks through their journey of life. I know I've had my fair share of them. The biggest bump in my academic life was changing it completely upside down. Growing up african American or with any skin that holds the slightest of pigment is not easy, but that's obvious due to our nation's past. Racism and stereotypeing has always been there.
There are many reasons as to why I want to lead. Especially this group of girls. One reason being this group of girl’s have become my sisters. I want to work harder and I feel as though leading will help me achieve that goal. I also, want the girls to work harder and become better dancers.
I have learned several things in band, but the one that sticks out the most is learning to be a humble leader. When thinking about how to persuade you that I was the most deserving of the scholarship, I was at a loss for words. I couldn’t figure out how to say why I was qualified without making myself sound egotistical and self absorbed with everything I have done. Though I have had several accomplishments that I have been a part of, I don’t want to discuss them in this paper. I don’t have to because you have seen and know what I have done in band.
Since the day I started at NBHS and got to witness the strength, responsibility, and the impressions able to be made by a senior with a title in the band, I knew I wanted to audition for one my junior year. I will never forget my original seniors. They were like gods to me. They knew everything about the band, they made it so the band would function at its fullest potential, and they brought guidance and structure to all those who were under them. There are many layers to band leader positions.
A drum major is not someone who is unkind, unfair, or thoughtless. A drum major must possess qualities of leadership, reliability, and self respect. I feel as though I am prepared to take on these responsibilities, and become the Brooks High School Drum Major. I am a great leader, I am most definitely reliable, and I highly value myself as a human being. Being a great leader and role model are two of the highest qualities that a drum major should possess.
As a sophomore at Bard High School Early Queens, my current ambition is to expand my knowledge on the history of our world, but more prominently to improve myself as a person, in which that’s probably the reason why everyone is here at an early college. Given the opportunities to introduce myself, I would like to start off by telling you about my goals and my anticipation i.e. earning an M.D. and become a medical doctor, or a Ph.D. and teach in the sciences, or perhaps both. Either way, my ultimate goal is to go back to Thailand; use the knowledge learned here, and apply it to my country. My love for my country is ubiquitous and I am highly confident that I will be able to benefit my country if I maintain my perseverance, determination, and dedication.
Ballet dancers display lower coping and cognitive skills and higher catastrophizing responses than other athletes (Anderson & Hanrahan, 2008). Ballet is physically and emotionally, an exhausting endeavor. To think that all of one’s hard work and dedication towards the art form could be abruptly snatched away with one injury is devastating. One twist of an ankle could be the end to a dancer’s career. One persisting source of pain could take away the one thing in life that brings you the most joy.
I’m applying to GHP because I want to share my appreciation of literature and meet others with the same interest. I expect to gain a better understanding of the communicative arts. My expectation to consult others with the same goal as I have and have our voices heard through projects that emphasize our messages. To attend GHP for communicative arts would be my goal because I’ve recognized how English molds every aspect of my life. Connecting with other people through literature and inspiring them to write is my passion.
As the picture shows above, I’m a musician. This picture shows the satisfaction of the hard work that has gone into months of learning/perfecting new music then putting the music and myself in front of people and trying to communicate what the music means to me. Unfortunately, this picture is incapable of showing just how deeply I love music. I believe that everybody has a hard time presenting who they really are/how they think to other people, but for a brief moment of time, writing/performing a new piece will let people see more about someone than words could ever show. Being able to effectively communicate through this method not only enriches the life of the musician, it can enriches the life of his/her peers and the community around the musician.
Going to college has always been a dream of mine, I never knew what I wanted to major in or any clue of what career I wanted to go into. It all started with my love of finding out more about the world around me I thought is was just my curiosity like everyone else but it was something different. That’s when I found my love for science. At first I really didn’t see my love for until sophomore year of high school when we would get on a subject and wanted to learn more about the particular subject not just what was in the book. Around my junior year is the when I knew had to start narrowing down my college choices.
Personal Vision I believe passionately that public schools should be focused primarily on instruction and student achievement. Everything that we do, and every system that we have, must be aligned to support the work of teachers and principals in the delivery of instruction. It’s about instruction and only instruction. Student learning and achievement is our whole reason for existing.
Since my junior year in high school I have known that I would like to pursue a career in medicine, and there are three major reasons why I know such a career is right for me. The first reason is that I am utterly fascinated by the human body. As a Biology major taking classes such as Genetics and Cell Biology, my appreciation of the complexity of our bodies grows every day. As I learn more about Biology it becomes more and more apparent how little we know, and how much there still is to learn. I became a Biology major because I am interested in working to discover the answers to the many questions that still remain, especially those about the function of our own bodies.
There are many different types of career pathways one can take. You can go into the medical field to become a doctor, or perhaps decide to go into the science field to work with different chemicals or biology. The career I wish to pursue is in the field of music. Some say that finding a good career in music is difficult. Many think that music careers are singers, rockstars, or teachers.
