There are two theories that allow an individual to become goal oriented and react in either a positive or negative behavior they are: Control theory and Self-discrepancy theory. According to authors Baumgardner and Crothers, both theories have the same effect, which reflects goal behaviors. A similarity that is pointed out is that of both theories rely on that discrepancies are what constitute regulation of an individual, but their approaches are different (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009, p. 157). Another similarity both theories share is the process of emotions, but the difference is how each emotion is predicted in regards to achieving or approaching the goal. However, there are some differences that contribute to different reactions and outcomes …show more content…

The authors Baumgardner and Crothers suggested that the self-discrepancy theory involved the true self, the ideal self, and the "ought" to be self (p. 156). These "selves" involve how the individual sees him/herself approach to the goal and how they should achieve the goal. Each one of these self-guides helps move the self to a certain direction. Baumgardner and Crothers state each self has certain disposition: Actual self-refers to the beliefs the individuals has, the ideal self-refers to of what the individual wants to have in regards to abilities and qualities, and lastly the "ought" to be self-refers to what they should be approaching the goal that is common socially and morally (p. 156). Discrepancies have to occur for the goal behavior to occur. This allows emotions to arise and ignites the person to self-evaluate and work through the …show more content…

An individual who is always impulse and is quick to make excuses undermines the individuals own confidence and abilities to be effective (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009, p.170). Therefore, having less self-control and self-regulation derails the course of a plan and ultimately the interventions, and motivation attached to those goals. As a result ends with failure. So, if an individual can't control these aspects in their life the chances of success become less and less with every excuse, impulse, lack of confidence, and commitment. These negative aspects bring in negative irresponsible
