With the fast development of modern society, people suffer from stress from their family and work, so they start to seek ways to release their pressure in their lives. Moreover, people usually unconsciously sums up their own experience in positive views . In the essay “Immune To Reality” by Daniel Gilbert, he refers to the idea of “psychological immune system”, a tendency of human to adjust their negative perspective to another one, when people are suffering from wrenching setback. The tenacity of human psyche and its ability of self-protection make people form walls to protect themselves. To know what will happen in the future, people need to know who they truly are and what their personalities are inside themselves. Gilbert claims that people become unfamiliar with themselves through the psychological immune system. He states, “The benefit of all this unconscious cookery is that it works, but the cost is that it makes us strangers to ourselves” (132). When people cook facts, they cannot realize what they really are and discover what is inside of them. By cooking facts, people become unfamiliar with themselves because they start lose themselves. People might forget what they are pursuing for. However, if people have comprehensive cognition of themselves, they will make correct actions in their lives, but, people who are unaware of them are more easily lose their true selves through the process of psychological immune systems. In addition, people who have own opinions and thoughts are approaching successful because the psychological immune systems cause people mispredict the environment they face. Gilbert also assures “Ignorance of our psychological immune systems causes us to mispredict the circumstances under which we will blame others, but it also causes us to mispredict the circumstances under which we will blame ourselves” (134). People’s mind shaped information suit the reality so that people need guidance, knowledge, and understanding to make a correct prediction of future and avoid losing their true identities. With the correct prediction of future, people can avoid mistakes as much as possible and strive for succeed.
