The main objective of this paper is to provide an in depth viewpoint of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of Southern Company. Corporate Social Responsibility is a commitment that businesses and corporations make that holds them accountable for contributing to the economic development of where they are located. CSR also improves the quality of life for the company’s workforce, their families, and the community. To maintain their CSR, many companies choose to donate to charities, volunteer in their community, and “go green” to improve their surrounding environment. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation met with the awardees of the 2013 Five Star and Urban Waters Project. The awardees were recognized and honored for their efforts to restore streams and watersheds. The Five Star and Urban Waters Project develops and supports community stewardship of local natural resources all across America. The program helps to fund projects that will essentially help preserve our surroundings for future generations. Projects aim to address the issues of damage to the ecosystem because of development from humans. The EPA, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and Southern Company recognized projects in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi. Southern Company’s support of the Five Star and Urban Waters Project Restoration Program is a reflection of how committed the company is to preserve and protect surrounding natural resources. The community service groups’ work to help better their communities schools education programs, hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, libraries and children’s homes. In total thousands of employees and retirees of these community service groups have put in over two hundred thousand volunteer hours. This positive effort by employees shows the value that Southern Company has for the communities that they serve. Project SHARE Project SHARE is a program that is run by The Salvation Army in Georgia and the American Red Cross in Mississippi. Southern Company works with this program to help people who are in need of emergency assistance and basic necessities. The program provides these people in need with housing, food, medical care and utility services. It also helps those who cannot afford their utility services such as the elderly, the homeless, the disabled, and those who may be going through some form of financial setback.
