Corporate social responsibility, often abbreviated "CSR," has become one of the standard business practices of our time. According to Investopedia, a privately owned for-profit American website that focuses on investing education and financial news, CSR is a corporation's initiatives to assess and take responsibility for the company's effects on environmental and social wellbeing. There are often three aspects used to discuss the CSR, community, human rights and environment. Starbucks and Pret A Manger are both fast food companies that take CSR. Starbucks is a coffee house chain in America while Pret A Manger sells take-away food and is based in London. Both Pret A Manger and Starbucks give a discount for customers who bring their own reusable cup for beverage. This reduced the waste of food containing. Yet, Pret A Manger is doing worse on packaging waste than Starbucks as Pret A Manger prompts the customers to eat take-away food, which will produce many packaging waste such as plastic bag and plastic tableware. This is much different to what Starbucks did which do not sell take-away food mainly. In terms of energy saving, Starbucks is proud to have built over 1,200 LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified stores in 20 countries. Starbucks is the largest builder of green stores in its sector and its stores accounts for 20% of the LEED-certified retail projects globally, which means Starbucks paid so much effort on energy saving. In comparison with Pret A Manger, Pret A Manger does not attempt on green store as it sells take-away food mainly, less energy is used on dining room. I would like to give several recommendations to them. For Pret A Manger, it have a serious problem on packaging waste. I suggested it should give a discount to customers who bring their own reusable bags and reusable tableware besides of discount to reusable cups, or even selling dine-in food mainly instead of take-away food, so that the package waste can be minimized. Moreover, I advised Pret A Manger should promote the recruitment to refugees and veterans to help them get into society. For Starbucks, I have a minor criticism that it does not work with much charitable organisations as Pret A Manger does. I hope it can do
